Same Day Crown Digital Impressions for a Customized Fit

Same Day Crown Van Nuys, CA

Getting a same day crown is more convenient than getting a traditional one. Read on to learn more about the same day crown process. The conventional process of placing crowns requires at least two trips to the dentist's office, which can be a massive inconvenience for people with busy schedules.

The first visit is used to prepare the tooth being treated, and an impression of the tooth is taken. This is done by asking the patient to bite down on a mold. An impression of the tooth is left on the mold, and it is sent to a lab where crowns and other restorations are made. Temporary crowns are placed on the prepared tooth at the end of the first appointment to protect the tooth from bacteria and acids in the mouth.

The second appointment involves removing the temporary crown and replacing it with the customized restoration. This meeting usually takes place about two weeks after the first appointment. That is how long it typically takes for the custom crown to get back to the patient.

Getting a same day crown

Things run a lot smoother when getting a same day crown. The entire process is completed during a single visit, making same day crowns a more convenient alternative.

Same day crowns are made using computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing technology. This allows dentists to make restorations onsite while their patients wait in the dental chair. Here is what the process looks like:

  • The dentist preps the patient’s tooth for the crown by removing enamel from its sides. This is done when placing any type of crown to create a better fit with the restoration. Same day crowns often require less enamel to be removed since the restorations used are made to a higher level of precision
  • Once the patient’s teeth have been set up for the procedure, the dentist takes digital images of the patient’s mouth. These images are used to make a 3D model of the patient’s tooth. The model is projected on a screen the dentist uses to craft the patient’s crown
  • The crown is color-matched with the rest of the patient’s teeth, so it blends in. Once the dentist and patient are satisfied with how the restoration looks, the data is sent to equipment that mills the patient’s restoration out of solid ceramic blocks. It takes about 20 minutes to make restorations like crowns onsite. The patient stays in the dental chair while their restoration is made
  • Once the crown is ready, the dentist cements it to the prepared tooth to complete the procedure. The patient leaves the clinic with their tooth restored

Same-day crowns are made from ceramics, so they look just like natural teeth. Ceramic shares properties with real teeth, like their natural white color and translucence.
